20 Feb Love Goes Up (It’s the GOAT)
PASTOR WIL: So. First thing we shared with you was love grows up. Let’s talk about loves goes up, everybody say, “Goes up.” Uh-huh.
DR. GRACE: Love goes up, and the word of God says now thanks be unto God who always causes us to triumph.
PASTOR WIL: Mm-hm.
DR. GRACE: The second reason why people don’t experience victory is because they don’t go up. And it’s found in 1 Corinthians 13, and 13, it says, “Now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three – but the greatest of these is charity.”
PASTOR WIL: So, I need y’all to understand, when I say go up and tie that to the greatest, it’s when we talk about love that goes up, we’re talking about love that’s the best, that’s the top, that’s the greatest, and, and, and, we’ve been talking about how we start out with imperfect love, but there’s a greater love, there’s a better love, there’s a love that when you get, it will supersede, it’s called the greatest, and I, I used this term when I wrote the book on this, and I called it the goat. Somebody say, “The GOAT.”
Uh, the sports guys know, the GOAT is the Greatest Of All Time. Look at your neighbor and say, “The GOAT.”
The GOAT, the GOAT, sports, fishing, hunters know this, you know, people say Muhammad Ali was the GOAT. There’s a boxer, he was the greatest of all time. Some say Michael Jordan was the GOAT, uh, uh, or LeBron James was the GOAT, or is the GOAT, the greatest of all time in basketball. Some say the Dallas Cowboys are the GOAT. (Cheering, applause, laughter.) Actually, actually, the other two were debatable, but that’s no argument there. Okay, I’m sorry, let me stop. Let me stop.
Look at your neighbor, say, “Neighbor, you’re entitled to your opinion, but you’re not entitled to your own facts.” You’re entitled to your own opinion, you have your opinion on what’s the greatest, and so we all have our own opinion, we think it’s this, and we think it’s that, we think it’s this, we think it’s that. But that’s your opinion. That’s my opinion about these things. But, when it comes to facts, facts prove what is the greatest. Somebody say, “Facts.” So we have facts. To experience victory, we need the real GOAT. We need the real greatest of all time.
DR. GRACE: Mark 8:36, and it says, “For what shall it profit a man if he should gain the whole world and lose his own soul?”
PASTOR WIL: You know why that’s in the Scripture? Because some people think the GOAT is money. Oh, y’all ain’t workin’ with me. Some people say, “If I could just get enough money,” and they kill themselves trying to get more and more money, ‘cause they think money is the GOAT, they think money is it. But God just said, well if you get it all, what will it profit you if you lose your soul? Uh, uh, some people think the GOAT, uh, uh, um, is, is, uh, people, and so they spend all their lives trying to connect with people; but what did the Bible say, in Psalm 146?
DR. GRACE: “Put not your trust in princes nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.”
PASTOR WIL: See, let me explain some things to you about this, and understanding what the real GOAT is versus our superficial GOAT. Uh, it is because when you think something is the greatest and it lets you down, it’ll crush you.
DR. GRACE: Absolutely, absolutely.
PASTOR WIL: A lot of people are devastated right now because they put their trust in people, they put their trust in jobs, they put their trust in careers. You gave it your life, you gave that person the best years of your life, you gave that job all of this time, and then, soon as they could cut their bottom line, they let you go.
DR. GRACE: Yes, amen.
PASTOR WIL: And so some people became devastated, they lost themselves, you know why? Because they said that this was the greatest and now what I thought was the greatest has let me down, and some people have lost themselves because they identified themselves with something that wasn’t the best, something that wasn’t the greatest, a person who you gave your heart to and your love to because you put your trust in them because you thought they were the greatest, and they let you down, so when the greatest lets you down, I’m gonna preach all by myself, that will debilitate you, it’ll cause you to go into depression and frustration and aggravation, people will lose their minds, they’ll lose their soul, they’ll lose their strength, why? Because you put your trust in the wrong thing. Mm-hm.
DR. GRACE: Zechariah 4:6, it says, “Then he answered and spake unto me saying this is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, not by might.”
PASTOR WIL: Now, that’s, that’s, that’s, that’s putting your trust in yourself, uh-huh.
DR. GRACE: “Nor by power.”
PASTOR WIL: That is, in position, in title, in finances, he said these aren’t the real answers, uh-huh.
DR. GRACE: “But by my spirit, sayeth the Lord of hosts.”
PASTOR WIL: He said the real answer is in the spirit. See, we’ve been loving stuff, and loving people, and stuff and people, we’ve been loving jobs and careers and jobs and careers and things that have been letting us down left and right, left and right. Now, uh, what some people do when they get let down, they withdraw, when they get let down, they give up, when they let, when they get let down they quit the job, when they get let down, they get a separation or divorce, because they put their trust in what they thought was the greatest and it isn’t, it is imperfect, it is childish, it doesn’t know the future, it doesn’t know the beginning from the end, and so we say, “Since you let me down, I must withdraw from you.” Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.
See, your love is so great that it deals with imperfections, it deals with, that’s why last week I told you that love gives you love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance, all of that was your birthright so that you could deal with these crazy people, deal with these crazy situations, that’s your birthright. When you get the love of God on the inside of you, you will understand that real love, the GOAT love, the greatest love, doesn’t come from these things because these things will fade away, they will let you down. Let me be real clear, you spend all your life going after something, and when you get to the top of it and it’s 60 or 70 years later, you realize you’ve been on the ladder of life, the wrong ladder all your life. When you should’ve been running after God you were running after money, when you should’ve been running after God you was running after stuff, when you was running after power, you wasn’t running after God, and God says, it ain’t by power, it ain’t by might, but it’s by my spirit that is the love of God, and when you give the love of God, baby, you will have the GOAT.
DR. GRACE: And, and, you know, the Pastor and I pray that you’re really getting this. If you have love, you have everything, because love covers a multitude. You walk into a hateful situation, and you show up, when you show up, love shows up, and it changes the whole environment, it changes the attitude of others to you, because love begets love. When you show love and you keep showing love, if they’re being hateful, I mean, you’re around haters, it’s just a matter of time before they catch on and they see that their hateful ways is not even touching, it’s not doing anything to you, because love is love, amen, and love is what the world needs, amen, love is what lights up this world.
PASTOR WIL: Money, the Bible says, answers all things, but money will fail, because money can’t give you peace.
Y’all ain’t workin’ with me.
People sometimes make you feel good – that first person you fell in love with, that first kiss, that first date, your best friend, your close friend – all of that stuff will make you feel good, but people will let you down, and so, they can’t be the greatest. Power will give you prestige, it will give you recognition. I don’t know about you but I like it, you know, sometimes, when people, when, when, you know, when people recognize you a little bit, little bit, little bit, y’all ain’t working with me, don’t you act like I’m crazy, you know you feel good when you get your little promotion, you know, I’m a head plumber. (Laughter.) I got the golden plunger.
Y’all ain’t working with me.
But you like that, you like your little titles, like your little office. Am I talking about myself? Am I the only one that’d enjoy getting a promotion, getting your little recognition, a little promotion party? You enjoy that, you know, you know how I know you enjoy it, ‘cause you tell people about it when they ask you what you do for a living, “Oh, I’m the head…” (Laughter.) “Yeah, I got four, I got five people report to me.” (Laughter.) What that means is that they make $7.35 an hour, you make $7.45 an hour.
Okay, I’m gonna preach over here. Am I telling the truth? We like that, but let me tell you something, that stuff will let you down, it will let you down. You can’t put your trust in that. Power will let you down. But if we want to get to the top, the real top, not the top of money, not the top of people, not the top of prestige, but the real top, we need the GOAT, the greatest of all time. You see, the Bible says, “Now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three – but the greatest of these is charity.” You see, you can have faith in this, you can hope for that, but God says the greatest is love, the greatest is love.
